Giantkin Follow-up: Orog

Post by IGTN »

Orog:
Orogs are the spawn of Orcs and Ogres. They are larger than a common orc, and more cunning, although not significantly stronger. They appear as pale orcs, and their facial features get the worst of both sides. Orogs mostly live in orc tribes and make their living as any other orc or ogre, hunting, foraging, and fighting, but a few strike out on their own or in groups of Orogs to live as bandits.

Orogs have the following racial traits
  • Medium Size
  • 30' movement
  • Humanoid Type, with the Orc subtype
  • Ogre Blood: Orogs count as Giants and Ogres for any effect relating to type or race, in addition to Humanoids and Orcs.
  • +4 Str, -2 Dex, -2 Int
  • Darkvision 60' and Low-light vision
  • +1 Natural Armor bonus
  • +2 to Hide, Move Silently, and Survival checks. Orogs are naturally stealthy, despite their clumsiness, and their lives leave them more than capable in the wilderness.
  • Feat Qualifications: Orogs can take the Large Size and Huge Size feats as [Monstrous] feats instead of [Fiend] feats. The normal rules for [Fiend] feats do not apply.
  • Favored Class: Barbarian and Rogue
  • Automatic Languages: Giant and Orc
  • Bonus Languages: Common, Dwarven, Elven, Goblin, Terran, Undercommon

I'm not really seeing a need for this. There are already hobogoblins. There are already bugbears. Orcs are already orc-like, and ogres are already big orcs. The one thing that really distinguishes these guys is that they make better sorcerers (and leaders) than orcs, but still get the strength bonus.

They're basically supposed to be mini-Ogres more than another breed of generic evil humanoid. Sort of a base to stick class levels on to make different kinds of Ogres, PC Ogres, and Ogre-Magi.

I'm seconding that there isn't a real need for these. The race doesn't seem over/under powered, but it doesn't seem needed either.

If you're going to have half giants at all, half-orc or half-dwarf half-giants are less insulting than half-human or half-halfling half-giants.

But the 3e Ogre is more Goblinish than Orcish, goblinoids are now their own thing distinct from Orcs and Kobolds. So Orogs seem to have been painted out of the picture since AD&D 2E. Half-Ogre, Half-Bugbear I could see, as could I see Half-Ettin. An Orc is basically half an Ettin anyway.

That and there are half-giants and Eneko (ogre mage version) around. The latter isn't even psionic, so hey.
